Allegheny General Hospital Awaits Delivery of First EC145

September 25, 2006

The first of four American Eurocopter EC145 helicopters will soon be delivered to Allegheny General Hospital. Due to arrive in January, 2007, this EC145 is one of four EC145s selected to replace four MD-900s currently in use by Allegheny's LifeFlight AMS service. With over 40,000 missions under its belt, Allegheny General Hospital's LifeFlight AMS serves west Pennsylvania, southeastern Ohio, northern West Virginia, and western Maryland.

Allegheny decided to buy the EC145s after an competitive bidding process in which Agusta, American Eurocopter, and Bell participated .All four EC145s are scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2007.

“We selected the EC145 because it best met our mission profile,” says Dr. P.S. Martin, Medical Director of Allegheny LifeFlight. “We do a lot of critical care interhospital transports for patients connected to LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) or interaortic pumps; both of which require a lot of space. The EC145 has enough room to accommodate them plus a medical crew. “The other reasons we bought the EC145 were its numerous features, and the ease of loading and unloading this aircraft in emergency situations.”

Providing ample room for a pilot and up to nine passengers, the EC145 is powered by two Turbomeca ARRIEL 1E2 turbine engines for reliable flight performance. It comes with a standard MEGHAS glass cockpit, and can be purchased with an optional IFR configuration with digital autopilot, for both single or dual pilot applications. The EC145 has a service ceiling of 17,200 ft, a fast cruise speed of 132 kts, and can operate in temperatures ranging from -35 to +50 degrees Celcius.

“Once we have all four EC145s in service, they will serve as our frontline aircraft,” says Dr Martin. “We look forward to using them for interhospital transport and scene response.”
