Anaheim Police Department Buys Second B2 from American Eurocopter

February 24, 2008

The Anaheim Police Department Air Support Unit is purchasing a second AS350B2 helicopter, which will be manufactured by American Eurocopter in the Department’s move to standardize its fleet. When delivered this fall, the B2 will replace one of two MD500s currently used by the Air Unit, which currently flies a total of three helicopters in total.

"We primarily support patrol operations, but we assist all divisions within the Department as needed, including tactical operations with our SWAT team. We also drop water and assist with other components of fire fighting," said Air Support Lieutenant Julian Harvey. "The overall performance and capabilities of the AS350B2 make it a superior aircraft well-suited to performing our many missions."

The AS350B2, which is also known as the “AStar B2,” has become a prime choice for U.S. law enforcement air support units. Powered by a robust, yet economical 732 shp Turbomeca Arriel 1D1 engine, the B2 has room for 6 plus a pilot and a sling capacity of more than 2,555 lbs.

"Our first B2 was delivered two years ago, and has proven to be very reliable and predictable," Lt. Harvey says. "This is why we are standardizing our fleet to this helicopter. In the meantime, I am looking forward to receiving our second B2, which American Eurocopter has promised for September 2008."
