LAPD Purchases 14th AS350B2 from American Eurocopter

February 24, 2008

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has purchased a 14th AS350B2 helicopter from American Eurocopter. Destined to serve in the LAPD’s Air Support Division (ASD), the new B2 will join a mixed fleet of rotary and fixed wing aircraft. The LAPD’s ASD provides backup to the city’s patrol officers, conducts high altitude surveillance missions, and serves as transport for SWAT insertions and dog search teams.

“The Department wants to standardize our airframes, which is why the LAPD has purchased this B2,” says Sergeant Jorge Gonzalez, the officer in charge of the ASD’s support section. “Over the years, we have found the B2 to be highly reliable, dependable, and safe to operate. This matters, because the ASD spends a lot of time in the air. We log anywhere between 17,000 to 20,000 hours annually.”

The AS350B2s that the LAPD relies on are popular choices for U.S. law enforcement air support units. They like the power and reliability of the B2's robust yet economical 732 shp Turbomeca Arriel 1D1 engine, and the fact that the B2 has room for 6 passengers plus a pilot. The B2's large windows and forward-facing seats also ensure that everyone can see what is happening outside the aircraft at all times.

“The AS350B2 helps the LAPD execute our many missions, along with the other aircraft in our fleet,” says Sgt. Gonzalez. “It’s a very flexible platform that we count on every day.”

The LAPD began flying helicopters in 1956, starting with a single Hiller 12J assigned to traffic patrol duties. A second helicopter was added in 1963, and a third in 1968. A major expansion occurred in 1974. Today, the LAPD’s ASD has 77 sworn personnel with 18 helicopters and a King Air Super 200 in its fleet.
