Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Takes Delivery of Third AS350 B33

June 5, 2006

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department took delivery of their third AS350 B3 in a ceremony at American Eurocopter headquarters in Grand Prairie, Texas on Wednesday, May 31, 2006. Representing the department at the ceremony were Sgt. Steve Bertling, supervisor for the Air Support Unit and one of the department pilots, Corporal Kurt Franklin. The AS350 B3 was chosen for its power, speed, range, and capability in extremely high altitudes. Riverside county is the second fastest growing county in the United States, with an expansive territory of more than 7,300 mile. It’s also a highly diverse region, from 228 feet below sea level to mountainous areas of more than 10,800 feet above sea level.
“This county has everything from densely populated urban areas to expansive desert terrain,” said Sgt. Bertling. “So we needed an aircraft which could fly in any environment, and was able to carry enough equipment to perform all of our missions.”
The AS350 B3 will be used primarily for nighttime Law Enforcement missions and Search and Rescue, but will also perform transport and surveillance missions, according to Sgt. Bertling. The aircraft has been equipped with updated avionics, along with day and night VFR flight capabilities with an NVG capable lighting source. Riverside County has had an air support division for more than 25 years, and has been operating helicopters for over a decade. They currently have four flight crews.
