Carilion Clinic Selects the EC145 as the Foundation for its Air Ambulance Fleet

March 14, 2008

American Eurocopter today announced that Carilion Clinic has chosen the EC145 for its Life-Guard air ambulance fleet. Carilion chose the EC145 to support its expanding mission schedule and continued growth. The aircraft is expected to be delivered at the end of summer ‘08.
Carilion Clinic is a multi-specialty healthcare organization with more than 400 doctors and eight hospitals, based in Roanoke, Virginia. Carilion operates the region’s only Level-1 Trauma Center. Carilion Clinic Patient Transportation operates Virginia’s first aeromedical program with helicopter bases in Roanoke and Radford.
Through a very thorough and exhaustive process, the EC145 was chosen to replace a Bell 412. “The size, power and safety features of the EC145 made it stand out from all vendors,” said Susan Smith, Director, Carilion Clinic Life-Guard.
The EC145’s excellent performance, fast cruise speed, and large cabin have made it the helicopter of choice for a growing number of AMS operators in the United States and worldwide. The aircraft’s safety features also distinguish it in the industry, and these safety features are one of the main reasons the EC145 was chosen by Carilion Clinic.
Powered by two Turbomeca ARRIEL engines, the EC145 offers high set main and tail rotors. It is capable of excellent single-engine performance, as well. The aircraft is offered in single pilot IFR and dual pilot IFR configurations. Both options are equipped with the modern MEGHAS glass cockpit and digital autopilot, which can greatly reduce pilot workload. All seats are 20G impact rated.
“I can't wait to get the EC145 delivered and start flying! It will be a great asset to Life-Guard,” explained flight nurse, Heather Menzies. “The spaciousness of the patient compartment area allows greater patient access during flight, making it easier for the medical crew to provide lifesaving care during transports. Large side and aft window areas in the patient compartment allow the medical crew to have a greater view out the sides of the aircraft as well as of the tail rotor area during takeoffs and landings.”
Carilion’s new EC145 complements an EC135 placed in service in 2005 at the Life-Guard 11 base in Radford, Virginia. Cockpit commonality between the two aircraft should simplify the transition between them, in the event of cross-training of flight crews.
Since 1990, Carilion Clinic Life-Guard has partnered with Air Methods Corporation to provide superior aviation services. The new EC145 will receive a custom completion from Air Methods Corporation, Products Division in Englewood, Colorado. In addition to the aircaft’s multiple standard safety features, some additional safety features have been selected, including complete compatibility for Night Vision Goggles (NVG’s), an industry-leading satellite tracking system, and the new Terrain Awareness Warning System (TAWS) approved for the first time specifically for a rotor-wing aircraft. The Carilion Clinic Life-Guard medical crews will begin extensive training in NVG’s this spring.
The EC145 delivers a top speed of 145 kts and a fast cruising speed of 131 kts that will allow Carilion Clinic Life-Guard to quickly respond in critical situations throughout its service areas in western Virginia. With standard tanks, the EC145 has a range of 370 nautical miles. With a service ceiling of 17,200 ft. and an operating range of -31 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, the aircraft also offers hot and high performance.
